Tips On Medicaid

Author: Bob Hett

Medicaid can be confusing if you are not familiar with it. If you have never had to use Medicaid services, you may no know a lot about it. Having Medicaid information is important in any state. The requirements for Medicaid vary from state to state, but the programs are generally the same. Federal and state monies fund Medicaid. The government sets up the programs, and the states decide how to administer them.

Florida Medicaid follows the same general guidelines as other states. The purpose of Medicaid is to provide low-income families with children and also individuals with health care. Applications for Florida Medicaid are obtained from the Florida Department of Children and Families, or DCF. They can also provide a list of physicians, specialist and HMO providers that accept Medicaid payments.

The people that are eligible for Medicaid include low income families with children, women who are pregnant, infants and children under the age of 21, SSI recipients, people who are older than 65, those that are blind or permanently disabled, people who are in need of long-term care in a nursing home, people on Medicare, and emergency services for aliens or refugees. There is also a medically needy program for people with extremely high medical bills whose income is normally too high for Medicaid, but they have run out of insurance benefits or have no insurance at all. These are usually people who have suffered a very serious disease of some kind.

The kinds of things Medicaid covers include: long term care, hospice care, home health care, prescription drugs, inpatient hospital services, outpatient hospital services, procedures performed at surgical centers, county health department services, community mental health services, child health check ups, physician services, family planning, pregnancy, and birth services, dental, vision, hearing and therapy services for children under 21, lab and x-ray services medical equipment and supplies, and transportation to and from a Medicaid covered appointment.

The eligibility requirements for Medicaid depend on many things. Even if you dont think you would qualify for Medicaid health insurance you should check it out. It is possible to have assets, money and a home and still qualify. Filling out the application and talking to a caseworker is the only way to find out for sure. It costs nothing to apply, and you can be approved in a very short time and begin receiving health care coverage. If you have no insurance benefits or other health care coverage and have children, it is a good idea.

While Medicaid was not designed for lifetime use, it is a valuable asset for people who are having financial problems or need to go into a nursing home facility. Having Medicaid information is smart. Knowing about the programs can help someone who does not have other resources.
