Work At Home Moms: Competing Demands

Author: Top Wahm
Work at home moms seem to have it made. They have the opportunity to be available for their children while also contributing to their household income. They are able to start new businesses that may eventually grow and become very prosperous. Work at home moms also have the benefit of keeping sharp and having news skills and experiences to add to their resumes when and if they decide to go back to working outside the home.

It's a great arrangement if you have the opportunity, but it's important to realize that it isn't all sunshine and lollipops. Working at home is hard work! It makes for a demanding schedule, which typically includes many competing demands. There are professional obligations as well as the daily (sometimes hourly) activities that are necessary to care for a home and a family.

A work at home mom can become sidetracked easily. The main argument for working at home was the ability to spend more time with family, but many WAHMs soon find that the demands of home and family can leave little time for paying work. It is therefore imperative to create a schedule in order to make sure everything and everyone gets a fair share of your attention.

Every work at home mom needs the support of her family to help create a routine that works for everyone. Help your children understand that sometimes Mommy has to work, and that you will be happy to play in a little while. Try to schedule the largest part of your workload for times when children take naps or engage in other activities. Enlist the help of older siblings and your spouse or extended family as well.

While it is nearly impossible to keep a rigid schedule, it helps to bring at least a semblance of order to your day. You'll find that you get more work done. You'll actually have more time for both work and family when things are more organized and when the people you love and the people who pay you aren't competing for your time.
